Description
Director of Safety and Compliance is a senior-level position responsible for overseeing all aspects of safety and compliance within the company, ensuring adherence to all relevant federal, state, and local regulations, industry standards, and company policies by developing and implementing safety programs, conducting regular audits and inspections, and promoting a culture of safety across all departments, while also managing a team of safety professionals and collaborating with senior management.
Position will require travel to various facilities in Eastern Ohio and Western Pennsylvania. No overnight travel required. Employee will be on call 24/7. Employee will be reimbursed for mileage incurred as a result of required travel.
Responsibilities
• Manage a team of environmental and safety professionals and third-party consultants to achieve successful completion of tasks.
• Collaborate with operations personnel, management, insurance companies, attorneys, and government officials to avert potential fines and reduce incidents by proposing strategies and implementing best management practices and engineering controls to correct any potential compliance or safety issue and resolve litigation.
• Evaluate new projects and confirm alignment with all local, state, and federal mandates and company goals and objectives relevant to the collection, transportation, treatment, storage, and disposal of solid waste, infectious waste, and hazardous waste.
• Implement environmental and safety programs; and enforce EHS policies and OSHA regulations.
• Conduct regular audits and inspections to ensure ongoing compliance.
• Compile data and prepare reports for submission to various regulatory agencies using excellent report writing skills with the ability to communicate complex information clearly.
• Participate in various state and federal advisory committees to stay informed on policy initiatives affective the company.
• Perform similar work as required.
Job Requirements
• Bachelors Degree in Environmental or Safety Management, or related field; 2 years of experience preferred.
• Prior management experience is a must.
• Possession of a valid Driver’s License and ability to legally operate a motor vehicle.
• Knowledge of DOT, OSHA, PADEP regulations, and Ohio EPA regulations.
• Ability to conduct visual inspection of facilities and negotiate uneven and rough terrain in varying weather conditions.
• Ability to provide information verbally, non-verbally, and in writing using language style, organization, and format appropriate to the subject matter, purpose, and audience; read English at a level necessary to examine, interpret, and apply legal, technical, and complex environmental guidelines, documents, records, and reports; speak English at a level necessary to communicate clearly and effectively; and write English at a level necessary to produce concise, accurate, and impartial reports, narratives, summaries, and recommendations.
• Apply technical procedures used in investigating, identifying, and correcting safety, environmental and hazardous materials problems.
• Work independently, prioritize work, coordinate activities, and meet critical deadlines; identify and effectively handle multiple activities and resources necessary to perform job assignments; organize, process, and evaluate data and ideas to make effective decisions and develop appropriate solutions; and use sound judgment and personal initiative to accomplish assignments.
• Work cooperatively with others and build and maintain constructive relationships with those encountered during the course of work, including responding effectively and tactfully to hostility, confusion, or concern expressed by others; contribute to group efforts with ideas and suggestions; and understand and accept differences in attitudes toward safety/environmental problems and regulations.
• Perform advanced functions in word processing, electronic mail/calendar, spreadsheet, presentation and database software.
• Represent the Company in a positive and professional manner in all engagements with employees, the public, and regulatory agencies.
• Follow instructions of supervisor.
• Foster a harassment-free workplace and adhere to all corporate policies.
Special Requirements
• Employee must adhere to all site safety rules and regulations. Employee will be asked to provide their own safety shoes.
• Must be able to pass a pre-employment background check and drug screen.
